1979–1980 – London, England
After leaving Israel, I arrived in London in 1979 and began another new chapter in my life — and in my musical journey.
My old friend Mike Lichtman was living in London at the time, so it wasn't long before we found ourselves playing together again. We managed to pick up a few local gigs in pubs around London, continuing a musical friendship that had begun several years earlier in Cape Town.
I also joined a traditional Jewish folk and wedding band, performing at small gatherings and celebrations. It was quite a change from the progressive rock, jazz and original music I had been playing in Cape Town, but it gave me the opportunity to experience yet another style of music and to keep playing during my time in England.
In December 1979, I got married, and naturally the wedding band provided the music for the occasion. The photographs below show me sitting in with them on bass at my own wedding — not many grooms get to play at their own reception!
My time in London was relatively brief, but music once again provided a connection between the different chapters of my life. Wherever I seemed to go, I somehow found musicians to play with — and often found myself reconnecting with old musical friends along the way.
