The Xtra was a four-piece classic rock cover band built around something we all enjoyed — playing great songs and having a good time doing it.

With Dave Skilton on guitar, Keith Hansuld on keyboards, Tom Kerr on drums and myself on bass, we also had four musicians who could contribute vocals. This gave the band plenty of flexibility and allowed us to cover a surprisingly broad range of material.

Our repertoire stretched across several decades of rock, blues and popular music, with songs by artists including Eric Clapton, The Band, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, The Beatles, Dire Straits, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Idol and The Rolling Stones.

The live recording below was made at Andrew’s Place in Toronto on December 3, 2019. The 28-song set gives a good snapshot of what The Xtra sounded like live, ranging from “Layla,” “The Weight” and “Folsom Prison Blues” to “Sultans of Swing,” “White Wedding,” “Take the Money and Run” and “Brown Sugar.”

The Xtra was another enjoyable chapter in my musical journey — playing bass, singing and performing some of the music I had grown up loving with a great group of musicians.
