2007-2017 – Nicholas Berzsenyi

2007–2017 — Nicholas Berzsenyi

Nick has been a close friend and fellow musician of mine for many years. We first met in 1990 at the music sessions at Maxwell’s, shortly after I arrived in Canada, and music has remained an important part of our friendship ever since.

During the 1990s, I played bass as a sideman in several of Nick’s bands and projects. Over the years we continued to work together, eventually developing a particularly productive songwriting and recording partnership between 2007 and 2017.

Technology made it possible for us to collaborate even when we weren’t in the same room. We could exchange audio and MIDI files over the internet, each adding ideas, arrangements and instrumentation before sending the music back and forth. It was an early version of the remote recording process that has since become commonplace.

Nick and I approached music from different directions, which made the collaboration especially interesting. Ideas would evolve as they passed between us, often becoming something neither of us would have created independently.

Below are some of the compositions that came out of those years together.
